Montreal hosts saucy (but serious–not!) Jean Paul Gaultier retrospective.

Another reason to go to lovely and so-civilized Montreal this summer: The Montreal Museum of Art’s just-opened “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk.” Pity poor bigotry-spewing John Galliano: though already there’s talk of a comeback–that’s the rag trade for you. Gaultier’s getting his just due, letting his designs speak for themselves, instead of him, well, you get it. This show puts Manhattan’s big shows to shame. It’s downright hyper, and features breakdowns of his work over the years through themes like “The Boudoir,” “The Urban Jungle,” and lots of multi-media fun. It’s got everything, and is running through October 2nd. Showcasing 140-ish ensembles–dating from 1970 to 2010–the exhibition is the first official retrospective of the wild and bawdy fashion darling’s creations, including those for Madonna, Dita von Teese, Milla Jovovich (pictured in “The Fifth Element”) and sassy semi-newcomer Agyness Deyn (shown with Gaultier). Fashion on this level shouldn’t be taken seriously, and the show takes much of it tongue-in-cheek. Lots of cheek. Here, a taste.
