‘The Savoy Cocktail Book’ and ‘The PDT Cocktail Book’ are the go-to drink recipe tomes for X-mas and onward, no! And they have pictures inside too!

Remember the good ole days when cocktail books used illustrations to, well, illustrate, drinks?

The original had it all. Here’s how it’s described, relying, yes, upon Wikipedia: “In 1930, the Savoy Hotel first published its cocktail book, The Savoy Cocktail Book, with 750 recipes compiled by Harry Craddock of the American Bar and art deco ‘decorations’ by Gilbert Rumbold. The book has remained in print since then and was subsequently republished in 1952, 1965, 1985, 1996 and expanded in 1999 with some new text and a number of new cocktails added by Peter Dorelli.

Now comes The PDT Cocktail Book (Sterling Epicure), which also relies upon near-surreal illustrations as opposed to cocktail-porn shots. Its creators are master mixologist Jim Meehan, of the New York bar PDT (“Please Don’t Tell”), and artist Chris Gall, and it includes 300-plus recipes.

Rather than relying upon punch bowls and eggnog, get creative and sink deeply into these pages. Both are available on-line or in the cooking and drinking sections of your friendly neighborhood bookstore (if you can find any around anymore).
