Fifty Years of Fabulosity

Style Counsel

In time for Fashion Week, the CFDA looks back with a book on its illustrious history and influence on style, and how the institution put New York City on the haute-rag map.

The Mercedes-Benz Fall 2012 Collections for women kicks off this Thursday, February 9th, through February 16th, and one way to get all randy about it is to pick up the CFDA’s new tome and check-out the corresponding exhibit at FIT.

The book is entitled “IMPACT: 50 Years of The Council of Fashion Designers of America” (Abrams, $60), by Patricia Mears, with a preface by Diane von Furstenberg and a foreword by Cathy Horyn.

We’re talking 304 pages with 500 full color and black-and-white illustrations. Here’s how they describe it:

“IMPACT is the definitive celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), and explores the impact of America’s most influential designers over the last five decades. As a companion to the book, the Museum at F.I.T. in New York City will host the exhibition, IMPACT: 50 Years of Fashion from the CFDA (February 9 – April 18, 2012), featuring the work of approximately 400 CFDA members.

Anchored by Patricia Mears’ illuminating essay on the history of the CFDA, the book showcases over three hundred personal statements and images from the most important names in American fashion including: Oscar de la Renta, Geoffrey Beene, Tory Burch, Tom Ford, Halston, Norman Norell, Marc Jacobs, Norma Kamali, Pauline Trigère, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Helmut Lang, Liz Lange, Ralph Lauren, Bob Mackie, Catherine Malandrino, Zac Posen, Narciso Rodriguez, Vivienne Tam, Vera Wang, Stuart Weitzman, Bill Blass, Rudi Gernreich, Bob Mackie, James Galanos, David Yurman, and more. This is the first time this amazing group of designers has been collected in one volume.

The insightful and reflective essays are written by the designers themselves as well as a selection of some of the top tastemakers including Anna Wintour, Bridget Foley, and Andre Leon Talley making IMPACT the ultimate who’s who of fashion.  Accompanied by elegant photographs of these career-changing moments, this book is the definitive word on the voice of American fashion.
