Aaron Curry, “Buzz Kill”

Art & Design

In theory, Curry’s sculptural rehash of the modernist canon—which formally namechecks historical heavyweights from Picasso to Miró—should be a derivative mess. That it’s not is testament to the artist’s intelligence and panache. This show, for example, channels Richard Serra via Alexander Calder with an installation that breaks the space into four discrete rooms, taken up, in turn, by additional Curry works. The bright red spectacle of the central piece is masterfully kept in check by a continuous covering of black-and-white silk screens on cardboard (depicting an indeterminate texture meant to recall the surface of the sculpture) that spreads across the walls, the floor and the ceiling.
