‘The Master’ vs. ‘Citizen Kane’
While much hub-bub has been made likening Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s character in “The Master” to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, we think that director Paul Thomas Anderson was taking his inspiration from “Citizen Kane” and its larger-than-life character Charles Foster Kane, portrayed by the increasingly beefy Orson Welles. Look at the body language, the expressions, the way both are wearing their clothes, the mustaches. The arrogance!
You decide….
Meanwhile, the film just made history, being the biggest-grossing art-house film of all time. Not bad, considering it was generally believed “The Master” would never, ever get made…It’s on our procrastinating matinee list this week for certain.
