Our Fave Goosebump-Inducing Dead-of-Winter Movies

Hollywood

‘Deadfall’ is the latest all-fall-down thriller to make us snuggle up in bed and watch the snowy Domino Effect go into play.

Of course, “It’s a Wonderful Life” is as scary and tragic as it gets, but for real holiday shutting in and freaking out, you have to rent those classic films in which very bad things go horrible wrong as the snow starts piling up, then melting, and REVEAL!

The latest is the indie-film “Deadfall,” now playing at select theaters. It’s about two incestuous siblings, played by Eric Bana and the sultry Olivia Wilde, who are on the run from a casino heist gone wrong.  Addison (Eric Bana) and Liza (Olivia Wilde) are reeling from a casino heist gone wrong. Naturally, a state trooper is killed (see: “Misery”), and then so many more, as blizzard weather makes the blood splatter all that more sinisterly enticing. This is a great winter’s night noir, also co-starring Sissy Spacek and that old grizzled Rhodes Scholar, Kris Kristofferson. Likely, you’ll get it on-demand sooner than later. There was no advertising promotion t’all.

Our other favorites: “Misery,” “Ghost Story,” and the near-genius “A Simple Plan,” featuring Billy Bob Thornton, robbed of an Oscar here. Fix an eggnog with Jim Beam, get under the Pendleton, and watch them all back to back. You won’t endeavor the weather until the bears come out of hibernation. P.S. We’re praying that someone eventually makes a film adaptation of the classic dead-of-winter novel, Donna Tartt’s “The Secret History.” Brrrrrrrrrr….
