When people ask me where to go shopping in London there always seems to be the big question whether they should go West or East. Both areas offer an amazing choice of boutiques, however, to maximize your shopping time and to avoid sitting in London’s traffic too much, I recommend you dedicate your shopping trip to just one area at a time.

I live in West London, so let’s start with my favourite stores this side of town.

Wolf & Badger

This unique retail space, also called “The Lab”, rents out trade space to up-and-coming designers, and with this model currently supports the very best London Fashion Week NEWGEN designers alongside other leading independent luxury brands. This is a shop to discover the next big thing at a relatively low price. I love their unique jewellery collection and whenever they launch their new designers I feel like I need to buy the whole store. If you’re after the latest and freshest talent, this is the place to go.

Dover Street Market

DSM to me is the designer Olympus. The fact that it’s situated over 6 floors with each floor presenting a clever mix of art, established labels and the must-have pieces of the season only enhances this impression (it feels like it gets better the higher you climb…). Expect to find the key players of the season, London’s largest Azzedine Alaia collection and all Comme des Garcons brands while ascending from floor to floor through this industrial inspired retail playground.

Nestled between sex shops in the heart of Soho this shop looks like an art gallery but is in fact a designer den with a clever mix of established and new labels. The new labels are so new that some of them only just graduated from college. You’ll find them next to well-known names like Mugler, Louise Gray, Chalayan, Siblings, Raf Simons and MCM. The edit is couture street wear and creative dressers will be very happy in this store.

I like it when shopping can be combined with sightseeing and Liberty offers an amazing insight into London’s history. The iconic department is situated in an exceptional Tudor-style building with an impressive inside courtyard. The store is bursting with historic features and in this setting you’ll find a selection of cutting edge and avant-garde labels celebrating the best of British and abroad. The store is a pleasure to visit from the moment you enter via the flower shop at the Great Marlborough Street entrance, checking out new beauty brands on the ground floor, admiring the designer selection from one of the galleries to a well-deserved cream tea at Café Liberty.

Atelier Meyer

Atelier Mayer is the grand dame of vintage. A store made for collectors and connoisseurs of fashion with heritage, craftsmanship, good design and style. The store presents itself with understated elegance, and only a second look reveals the quality of its stock and labels. The upstairs wets your appetite but the real treasures are hidden downstairs. It’s an Aladin’s cove with the most exquisite selection of cocktail dresses and ball gowns. This is vintage haute-couture shopping  on the highest level and a real pleasure.
