Behind the Design of Thompson Chicago with Thompson Tastemaker Tara Bernerd

Art & Design

Tara Bernerd doesn’t follow trends, she makes them. Having crafted the look of the newly opened Thompson Chicago to elicit the autumnal feel of vintage Saint Laurent encompassing seductive woods and petrol blues, the raw industrial edge still creates an immediate sense of invitation when you walk through the doors. But don’t take our word for it, check out our interview with Tara Bernerd and most importantly… come see for yourself!

What do you want people to feel when they first visit Thompson Chicago?

“Like a winter’s coat being lifted off your shoulders, it is our aim to create a space that may not feel like home, yet how you hoped home would feel. We drew on the history of Chicago, the attitude and this combined with a sense of something sophisticated, yet still raw and edgy.”

Where did you look for inspiration when starting from scratch?

“Without a doubt the most challenging part of this project was confronting the existing building and thus the internal architecture. I have always admired the more industrial look of the original lofts, i.e. Pierre Chareau’s La Maison de Verre; the edgy approach of architects such as Tadao Ando, thus I have used materials where a more raw design approach prevails.”

How did you extend the design philosophy of the public areas to the guest rooms?

“Bedrooms are kept as spacious as possible, embracing the city’s skyline with floor to ceiling glass windows of iconic Chicago views. Warm, yet edgy palettes are introduced in a contemporary style mixing a vintage feel, highlighting craftsmanship and every bedroom benefits from bespoke furniture design.”

How do you set the mood at Thompson Chicago?

“Lighting plays a role throughout and with different moods for different times of the day. A striking metal chandelier takes precedence as a centrepiece to the lobby. More unusually, an interesting vintage collection of table lights and standing lamps add to the character.”
