The Swedish arbiters of cool have opened up shop in a 5,000-square-foot hybrid art-retail space in downtown LA. Shoppers to Acne Studios are greeted by a Carsten Holler mushroom installation, before entering to browse the line’s understated, utilitarian, and totally cool apparel and accessories for men and women. The space also houses ilcaffe, a coffee shop modeled after founder and creative director Jonny Johansson’s favorite Stockholm cafe.
It was the building itself, the teal-hued Eastern Columbia Building built in 1930, that attracted Johansson initially. The location places it across the street from the near-future site of the ACE Hotel, and provides an intriguing contrast to the store’s brand-typical industrial interior.
Between Acne and ACE, the Theater District strip is sure to light up, so get over there soon as an early adopter.
