Homesick Americans or plain old history buffs might want to celebrate George Washington’s birthday February 22 by paying a visit to the Founding Father’s bronze likeness in front of the National Gallery. The 18th-century rebel vowed he’d never set foot in London after defeating the British in the Revolutionary War, so when the statue was gifted to the UK from the state of Virginia in 1924, a patch of soil was flown in from Washington’s adopted home, and that is what he continues to stand on as he looks over the square.
