As design directors at the acclaimed Chicago-based interior design firm Nate Berkus Associates, Creative Spirits Sasha Adler and Lauren Buxbaum have expertly decorated some of Chicago’s most stylish spaces. The dynamic duo shares an affinity for strong pieces with hints of femininity.
We recently sat down with Sasha and Lauren to get the scoop on their favorite places in Chicago, including where to find the best home décor in the city.
Thompson Chicago: Describe your ideal Chicago day.
Lauren Buxbaum: A trip to the dog park followed by a brunch with Bloody Mary’s at The Publican and a massage.
Sasha Adler: A walk along the lakefront to the Lincoln Park Zoo with my family, a stop at Broadway Antique Mall, and an afternoon outside at Big Star.
TC: What Chicago tourist attractions are always worth indulging in?
LB: An architectural boat tour, a visit to The Field Museum and The Adler Planetarium – the city’s most under-rated landmark, in my opinion.
SA: The Chicago Children’s Museum is a must, as is the Museum of Contemporary Art and The Art Institute – they’re always showcasing something spectacular. An architectural boat tour is the best spot to snap an Instagram photo!
TC: You’ve helped design some amazing homes throughout the city. What are the most-used colors in Chicago residences?
LB: A menswear-inspired color palette; camel, charcoal gray and navy.
SA: Monochromatic neutrals.
TC: Fresh flowers are a simple way to add color and life into a room. What is your favorite flower and where do you find them in Chicago?
LB: I’m really into getting large Camellia branches for my home from Christine Noelle. I love that you get the look of both the tall green leaves and the pretty flowers all in one.
SA: Peonies! Epoch Floral is the best. They have them flown in when they are not in season.
TC: In your opinion, when it comes to home décor, the item you should invest in most is…
LB: Vintage lighting.
SA: A sculptural cocktail table.
TC: There are some amazing specialty shops in Chicago, so let’s break down the best place to find…
LB: The Find
SA: Antiques on Old Plank Road
LB: Holland & Sherry
SA: De La Couna
TC: Budget-friendly options?
LB: The Ravenswood Antique Mart
TC: The perfect hostess gift?
TC: Cards & stationery?
LB: Kneen & Co.
TC: Hidden treasures for your home?
LB: Edgewater Antique Mall
