The futurist in our midst
Every day, Jason Silva, The Emmy nominated host of National Geographic’s hit series Brain Games, and the creator of Shots of Awe, is looking for patterns and trends—best of all—he is always open to serendipity. Why you ask? (Though shouldn’t we all try to live this way?) Because he is a futurist and self-described epiphany addict.
In keeping with his ever-inquisitive nature, Silva most recently collaborated on a film about nature and technology with Russian Standard vodka.
Here we chatted to Silva about the power of technology, it’s relationship to humans, and why he’s Miami’s biggest fan.
A futurist is a fascinating career to have, what does it mean exactly?
It’s a term that describes individuals who make extrapolations about technological change and offer insight into how these changes will transform the world. People started referring to me as a futurist because I make short form documentaries that speculate about the co-evolution of humans and technology. The videos have become really popular and I have spoken about these ideas for companies all over the world. Places like Google, IBM, Microsoft and many more.
What about the future are you most excited about?
The idea that exponential technologies are extending the boundaries of what it means to be human. We are fundamentally being transformed. We are the creators but also the created, says Wired co founder Kevin Kelly. We make our tools and technologies and they remake us in return. I’m excited by these changes. The impossible becomes the inevitable. “We are as gods and might as well get good at it,” says Steward Brand.
What most exciting about Miami right now? Do you have any favorite Jason-secret-spots of the beaten path you could share with us?
Miami is booming. The art scene, the restaurant scene, the massive cosmopolitan flair. I love the food. Omg. CEVICHE downtown is probably my favorite. I’m obsessed.
Do you have a life philosophy? If so, could you share it with us?
I celebrate curiosity and wonderment. That’s what counts. It’s all about chasing wonder. Chasing our passions. Manifesting. We the music makers. 😉
