A Friendship Turned Partnership

Designers Alison Booth and Alison Lovell met 20 years ago as next-door neighbors on Brunswick Street in Toronto. Their friendship blossomed and before long they were talking about a partnership that would leverage their complementary talents and diverse experiences.

Booth had designed for top fashion houses Celine and Coach, and Swiss-born Lovell had spent 10 years in the art world as a gallery director, curator and private art consultant, and launched a home and children’s accessories company.

Deciding to bust out on their own was a big risk, but one that has reaped major rewards. Their ever-growing handbag and accessories line brunswick & co. is stocked in only the very best boutiques in Toronto and has a huge online following, proving that this partnership is truly greater than the sum of its parts.

Here the pair share their top places to shop in Toronto and their most-loved neighborhood hang-outs.

What’s your design philosophy at brunswick & co.?

We believe in striking the perfect balance between classic and contemporary design. We want our bags to be timeless—we want you to wear our bag now and still love it (and wear it!) in 20 years.

What are your three favorite places to shop in Toronto?

–       Anything Smythe from whatever-wherever location we can access it!

–       6 by Gee Beauty is the first stop on any Toronto tour.

–       Queen Street West has a million great spots. It’s hard to choose but we do love Fawn, among other gems.

What neighborhood to you guys live in and could you share two of your favorite haunts?

Annex is our hood. Our favorite spots are any of Anthony Rose’s Resto’s establishments. They are all perfect—we love the Harbord Room! Downtown where our office is, there’s the eclectic coffee spot Tokyo Smoke.
