A Born Designer
Vince DeSantiago grew up in a creative home. “I’m a graphic designer by trade but photography has always been in my blood. I grew up engulfed in it,” says the native Chicagoan. “My dad was in the industry so I inherited my eye from him.”
DeSantiago’s talents present themselves in many forms—illustration, typography, apparel design—not to mention photography. His Instagram account @vincedesantiago has over 13K followers. As well as taking arresting pictures of environments like Iceland’s frozen landscapes and his city’s industrial structures, he is busy with The Nobody Design Co., his homegrown company that specializes in identity, illustration, and lettering.
Here DeSantiago shares his favorite spots in the evolving neighborhood of Logan Hill, the best Instagram spots in Chicago, and more.
How would you describe your typography aesthetic? And how does this differ from your photography?
I tend to be very minimal and clean with my typography. My photography is currently focused on the darker, grittier side of things. It changes often though, I may go back to clean and minimal photography. Who knows.
You have a very popular Instagram account, what are your favorite places to shoot in Chicago?
I really enjoy the South Loop. There’s a great mix of old and new architecture, the South Branch of the river, and the ever-present characters walking around.
What’s your favorite neighborhood in Chicago? Can you share 3 of your favorite spots?
Do you have any exciting 2016 projects you can share with us?
I’m curating and participating in a huge gallery show at Galerie F in August with a bunch of friends. It’s going to be a lot of fun!
