Swimwear Inspired by the Open Road
Tori Praver grew up on the sunny beaches of Maui, surfing and swimming in the waves of the island paradise. Her childhood experience led to a lifelong love of the beach lifestyle and provided the passion to launch her eponymous swimwear collection. Today, a successful swimwear designer and model, she knows just what women want in order to feel confident and comfortable.
Being whisked by the wind is how Tori envisions her life—always traveling and wandering at the loving mercy of the open road. All of Tori’s collections are influenced by the many exotic travels she has been blessed with and each of their unique cultures and gorgeous scenery. When designing the swim collection each season, Tori designs with her own style in mind – versatility is key. Her signature ruching technique, which is key to the collection’s fit and form to the body, is implemented throughout the line. Tori’s love of surfing and being active on the beach, coupled with her sophisticated eye for detail, inspired by the talented designers she’s worked with in her modeling career have provided the backbone of this versatile, chic brand.
We chatted with Tori about her favorite swimsuit, beach trip essentials, and the inspiration for her latest swimwear collection, which was previewed at Catch NYC in partnership with Thompson Playa Del Carmen.
Describe the perfect swimsuit in 3 words.
Little black bikini!
You’re always on the go! Tell us your dream day off, what would you do? Where would you go?
Obviously the beach! We live in Malibu so we are so close to the water. I love to spend time with my husband Danny and my daughter Ryan and to me, there is nothing more perfect than relaxing with the sand and ocean.
Complete this sentence: I never travel without…
My iPhone! Of course, I use it to stay connected for work but I also use it to take photos – not just to capture memories of my family but to reference things that inspire me for my designs!
What three words best describe the vibe and ethos of your swimwear line?
Feminine, Chic, Comfortable
How did growing up in Maui and your time as a swimsuit model inspire your designs? You must have worn some very impractical, but gorgeous suits!
As a result of growing up in Maui my love for swimwear started at a very young age! I was always at the beach and in the ocean, I lived in a bikini. Modeling also provided a big advantage to me as a designer because I was so inspired all the creative people in my industry, so many amazing designers, stylists, and fashion editors!
What items are always in your beach bag?
Water, Sunscreen, Magazines
Any tips for packing light on a beach vacation?
Bring things you can wear as a cover-up, or can also be worn in the night. My favorite items are flowy tops, and Greek sandals.
Do you have a go-to chic outfit that carries you from day to night?
I love jean shorts! I wear them with a tank top over a bikini during the day, then add a kimono or kaftan with lace up sandals at night.
What beach read would you recommend to a friend? Why?
A good juicy gossip magazine! It’s the only time aside from an airplane that I allow myself to read them. When I’m relaxing on the beach, I want to relax!
Do you listen to music while you design? What was the last album you downloaded?
I love all types of music, but when I was working on this past collection’s designs and editing for hours, I had the “Milky Chance” album on repeat.
What can we expect from your 2016 line? Has a particular place or era inspired those suits?
The 2016 collection was inspired by Mexican beaches, Latin cities, and the beautiful colors of the desert. It’s soft and feminine, but at the same time, sophisticated and sporty. Think colors like cactus green, sangria purple, and the colors of the ocean at sunset, light blue and and pink.
