Largest Free Blues Festival in the World
From June 10th to 12th, Chicago brings the largest free blues festival in the world to Grant Park. Living legends and local 12-bar regulars unite to give the city a range of performances. Those expecting Blues Brothers cover bands should steer clear (though you’re likely to hear a few renditions of “Sweet Home Chicago”). This year, headliners include singer Shemekia Copeland, trombonist Fred Wesley & The New JB’s as well as an all-star tribute to Chicago musician Otis Rush.
Since its first iteration in 1984, the festival has celebrated the centennials of Big Bill Broonzy, Bessie Smith, and Skip James; featured a dual performance by Chuck Berry and Keith Richards; and given Blues in the Schools students an opportunity the face the crowd. Come out to the park and become a part of Chicago’s vibrant music culture.
