Ana Mendieta’s Radical Work Goes on View
Cuban-born artist Ana Mendieta gained acclaim for her radical, boldly political work. Through photography, performance, film, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, and site-specific installations, she called attention, in particular, to feminist issues. Films and photography will be on view at Contact Gallery through October 29th in an exhibition entitled Siluetas. The name refers to Mendieta’s term for “fugitive, potent inscriptions of the artist’s body into the landscape, which are then transformed by fire, water, and other materials,” according to the gallery. This is dark, intriguing work.
