Sand > Grass
If the word “park” conjures images of grassy lawns and red and white checked picnic blankets, you’ve clearly been away from the beach too long. For a relaxing experience in the Riviera Maya, trade in grass for sand, your own packed cold cuts and bread for locally-manned fresh fruit carts. Spend a sunny day in Park Fundadores (also called Founding Fathers Park). The site hosts a pirate-shaped playground that will keep children occupied for hours. One of the original areas of Playa del Carmen, the park holds a bandstand that sometimes serves as a platform for live music. An arch statue makes for awesome pictures, particularly if you stand under it at sunrise or sunset. Flying Papantla performers also offer entertainment. If you need to get out of the sun for a moment, venture to the restaurants and shops all within walking distance.
