So You Want to Live in Cabo…

Enchanted by Cabo? Starting to plot your way to owning beachfront property? You’re not the first one. The region seduced Aaron Wesselink, a Director at El Encanto de la Laguna too. Since 2006, Wesselink has been managing and selling property in the area, from gorgeous beachfront spots to fixer uppers. Below, he tells about his path to living (and working) in paradise.

How did you get involved with real estate, and what do you love about the job? 

I started in real estate when I was 24 years old, living in San Diego. I received my California Real Estate License and went to work with Re/Max. Shortly into my real estate career I got into some development work as a partner of a teardown project in Mission Beach, California and then, a year and a half later, a slightly larger project located in Point Loma, California. I love finding opportunities in real estate and making them a reality. Whether the opportunity is a building a beachfront development on the perfect spot in Los Cabos—or a fixer upper—I love real estate as an asset class. It is rewarding to help clients invest in a new opportunity that is both a financial and lifestyle investment. I get to see many families enjoy their new Los Cabos life from the development I helped create. It’s a lot of fun.

What drew you to Cabo, and what keeps you there?  

When I was young, my parents would bring our family to Cabo for vacations a couple of times a year. My father loved Cabo so much and saw the impending growth. He decided to go from the typical timeshare stay to building a house in La Laguna, which led to the start of El Encanto de La Laguna. It did not take much to convince me to relocate, uniting my passion for real estate and my passion for all that is the Los Cabos lifestyle. I have lived in the La Laguna area of San Jose del Cabo now for 11 years and can’t imagine a better place. Perfect weather almost year-round, unsurpassed natural beauty, a true mecca for outdoor sports enthusiasts such as myself. Living in Los Cabos offers so much that I couldn’t get in the U.S., and at a fraction of the cost. Here, I’m exposed to both the Mexican culture and international expat culture. This is an enriching experience for my whole family.

What makes the La Laguna area and attractive place for those just visiting Cabo on a brief trip? 

The La Laguna area is special because it is off the beaten path, just slightly outside of San Jose del Cabo. I love the natural beauty of Los Cabos, the beaches, and the peace and tranquility of Baja. When I am in the small community of La Laguna, I simply get more doses of what I like about Cabo and less of what I don’t like about Cabo. We don’t hear the city, we don’t have hotels and tourists on the beaches. We have stunning desert scenes. It’s easy to get into town but just far enough away: the airport is only 35 minutes, the marina is less than 10 minutes, the vast open East Cape and empty beaches are just minutes down the road. It’s the best of both worlds. The community is boutique, people are friendly and know each other, there are community events and gatherings, it is overall just a special place inside of Los Cabos.

Name three considerations people should make when looking for a home to buy in Cabo—and usually don’t.

First and foremost, really get comfortable with the area and understand it. We always encourage perspective buyers to come and do a “try and buy.”  Feel out the pros and cons of location. Live it and hear the noises, take walks, meet neighbors. Secondly, make sure you have a professional do an inspection of the home and “look under the hood.” If you can get past maintenance bills or utility bills and study those, it might also shed some light on potential negatives. A lot of homes are not built with materials considering energy efficiency or low maintenance, which can be a problem. The third most important item I would recommend is to study the minutes of past Homeowners Association meetings and truly understand what is going on within the community. You can learn a lot from the minutes of the HOA and how things are functioning in the community as a whole.
