Upstate Art Spots

New York City taunts short-term visitors with endless art-related activities. Even long term residents have trouble keeping track of the gallery scenes in Chelsea and on the Upper East and Lower East Sides. Then there’s the pressure to hit all the shows at major institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, and the New Museum. It’s impossible to see it all.

Instead of running up and down Manhattan, consider taking an art day trip to Beacon. You’ll find two institutions, in particular, which boasts world-class art away from the masses. Don’t miss the Walter De Maria show at Dia:Beacon, a premier venue for minimalist work by artists from the 1960s and 1970s. A long-term exhibition of work by Anne Truitt is also a must for connoisseurs interested in geometric abstractions. While you’re in the area, hit the new Magazzino Italian Art warehouse in Cold Spring, where a gorgeous new, light-filled building hosts works from the Arte Povera movement.
