A Haven for Hatching

August in Cabo is all about the sea turtles. This month, partygoers and city folk head to the beaches to witness the beginning of hatching season. Seven sea turtle species exist worldwide, and five (Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Leatherback, Green Turtle, and Olive Ridley) nest on Mexico’s shorelines. The animals are seriously endangered, and the country has seen an especially sharp decrease in Leatherback turtle populations.

Inspired to do your part to help preserve the species? A special program allows you to adopt a turtle and release it into the wild by sunset over the Sea of Cortez. Around 35,000 sea turtles are illegally hunted and killed throughout the Baja California region, and you’ll be helping to counteract this kind of destruction. Sea turtles have roamed the seas for more than 100 million years, and you can do your part to ensure they will continue to do so for many more.
