Hanging out in the Hamptons
We know, we know. Advising New Yorkers to head to the Hamptons during the dog days of summer may not be the most novel suggestion. If you haven’t made it out East yet, you’ve probably at least thought about it. The beach, the quiet, the distance from the city’s steamy subways… there’s endless appeal to the area. Here’s a lesser known tip, though: the North Fork of the Hamptons also features some wonderful wineries. Why not head out there and drink a little more knowledgeably?
Kontokosta, located atop bluffs in Greenport, offers a gorgeous vantage in addition to some award-winning Sauvignon Blanc. The 62-acre waterfront tasting room and winery invites guests to sit on their outdoor patios and enjoy the fruits of this sustainable, wind-powered family endeavor. If you’re a bubbles connoisseur, you won’t want to miss Sparkling Pointe. The Southold winery features 40 acres of land, planted only with classic Champagne grape varietals (Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay). The state-of-the-art winemaking facility is relatively new—completed in 2010. Bedell Cellars boasts sustainable practices and one of the region’s best reds. The first grapevines were planted here in 1980 and are today some of the oldest grapes in the country.
