Gourds at the Garden
What is it about giant pumpkins that captures the cultural imagination? First you’ve got Cinderella, whose carriage turns into a pumpkin after midnight. Then you have the beloved children’s film classic, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Whatever it is, at least New York presents an opportunity to see the massive orange gourds IRL, letting you in on some of the magic.
Head to the New York Botanical Garden on October 21st and 22nd to celebrate Giant Pumpkin Weekend. Hailing from around the country, some of the specimens weigh more than a ton. Meet the growers and get your picture taken. The pumpkins will stay on view through Halloween.
While you’re at the garden, don’t miss the Chihuly exhibition, on view until October 29th. Dale Chihuly, the famous Seattle-based glass artist, brought more than 20 installations and drawings to NYBG for his first major New York garden exhibition in more than 10 years. Check out his drawings, too, for insight into his creative process.
