Walk along the lush green quad at Vanderbilt University and remember your own university days. Then, meander into the Fine Arts Gallery. Through December 7th, they’re hosting a show filled with expression. Who Are We? Identity and the Contemporary Photographic Portrait celebrates the emotion, identity, and entire world that a single photographic portrait can capture.
From Andres Serrano’s image of a young beauty queen to Shirin Neshat’s renderings of the Arab Spring, the included works tell stories local and international, humorous and poignant. Top-tier photographers including Nan Goldin, Chuck Close, and Carrie Mae Weems round out the roster.
Come January, the gallery will exhibit polaroids by pop art icon Andy Warhol. The blast from the past will feature pictures taken between 1970 to 1987, of celebrities ranging from O.J. Simpson to Dolly Parton, Bianca Jagger to Georgia O’Keefe.
