The Hip Hatmaker
The best way to protect yourself from the summer sun, and still look chic? Probably one of Alejandra Anglada’s hip hats. Anglada owns the concept shop, BIURIFUL, near the Thompson. Now, she’s bringing her hand-painted, wide-brimmed creations to the hotel. Every month, the color palette changes. This summer, look for deep, serene blues and sandy hues. Below, Anglada tells us more about her business.
How did you get involved in hat-making?
I studied fashion design in Barcelona, where I get very involved in accessories. But the hats came after moving to the Caribbean. At the beginning, I was just painting them for fun and joy. Then, everybody started going crazy over them. I decided to do it in a more formal way.
What makes Playa del Carmen a great place to run a boutique and concept shop?
Playa del Carmen has become the downtown of the Riviera Maya. People come for vacations full of shopping and food. We attract visitors from around the world.
Where in the city or region do you go for creative inspiration?
Inspiration is everywhere here. There are lots of natural mystical places. The colors from nature, sunsets, and sunrises are huge inspirations for me: I love color harmonies, and you can find them 24/7 just by observing what’s around you.
How did you decide on a sailing theme for the summer hats?
This could be kind of cliché, but that is what makes it cool: I think everybody associates the summer with the sea, a blue palette, resting, and the gentle movements of the boat and wind.
What’s up next for Biuriful?
Keep it beautiful, always, and Biuriful Tulum is opening very soon!
