See the Unexpected

In late 2016, seeing whales in NYC was such a rare experience that the coast guard sent out safety alerts to boaters. No-one is sure why, but the number of whale sightings in the five boroughs grew wildly last year. The trend continues: this summer, whales (and dolphins!) are spotted daily, not far from the shoreline.

We say make the most of it: Princess Cruises organize tours offering the opportunity to see humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins, and leaping, 70lb sturgeon—all with the New York skyline in the distance.

Cruises run from Riis landing, near Rockaway Beach, which can be reached directly via ferry from Wall St. Tours run 12pm-4pm Saturdays and Sundays, 1pm-5pm Wednesday thru Fridays in August. Princess Cruises make regular updates to their Facebook page giving you a sense of what to expect. Find all tickets and tour info here.
