More Than a Selfie Queen
Thanks to her talent for self-portraiture, Frida Kahlo remains one of art history’s most recognizable legends. While social commentary was embedded in her work, it is her personal image that endures in the popular imagination even today. Although this might give the impression of familiarity with the artist, Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving highlights neglected aspects of Kahlo’s legacy. Presenting important canvases alongside a trove of personal items unseen for over 50 years, the Brooklyn Museum asks us to look beyond the artist’s captivating appearance and consider her enduring spirit.
If that weren’t reason enough to head to Brooklyn, on May 4th you can enjoy a special night at the museum—the institution’s annual Celebrate Spring party is here. After a series of artist and curator talks, Afrobeat superstars Kaleta & Super Yamba will head up the dance floor with their signature psychedelic funk sounds. The best part? Entry is free. Get there early to avoid the line.
