The Jack O’Lantern Blaze has become an annual tradition in the small, legendary town of Sleepy Hollow, just north of New York City. Set in an 18th-century mansion, thousands of pumpkins are hollowed out and artfully crafted on-site. Over 7,000 pumpkins are on display, boasting much more than just the usual scary face. Master craftsmen create unique textures and depths, even going as far as recreating recognizable masterpieces.
This land-art installation takes matters seriously, with organizers citing Donald Judd and Robert Smithson as influences. To wit, everything is curated to draw attention to the architecture, landscape, and history of Van Cortlandt Manor. It’s a worthwhile day trip before enjoying the evening with us. September- November.
