Purveyor of stylish backpacks and indestructible outdoor gear, Filson’s Ballard store is a Seattle institution. Even if you’re not outdoorsy, their 6,000-square-foot flagship is worth a visit. Since starting their business in the 1890s, they’ve collected a lot of oddities along the way. The store offers a museum-like atmosphere, with artifacts on display from the Gold Rush era, alongside taxidermy, animal skins, and totem poles. There are other oddities to behold, including a jerky vending machine.
If that makes you thirsty, or if you just need a caffeine fix, local coffee roasters Fundamental Coffee Company are on site too. Oh, and don’t forget the actual goods on sale here, which include limited edition products you won’t find online or in other stores. Their fabled backpacks are made for life and constructed on site, along with the rest of their gear, including a wide selection of flannel and fleece will keep you warm as the nights get cold.
