Naked Ambition: Spirit of ‘76

New Helmut Newton reissue exhibits why we first fell for him and his “White Women.”

In 1976 Helmut Newton published his first book, White Women, which forever established him on the cutting edge of cool eroticism. Now for the 90th anniversary of Newton’s birth the book’s original publisher Schirmer /Mosel is re-issuing it in a cool new edition, which shows why many critics consider it to be his finest work. Printed in an even better quality than the original, the book of course contains Newton’s famous nudes, but also portraits of a young Karl Lagerfeld in St. Tropez, David Hockney in Paris, and the ever-alluring Charlotte Rampling. As in 1976 it’s still an intoxicating cocktail of aesthetic pleasure, technical perfection, and luxurious decadence.
