The King of Cool’s ‘Green Rat’ On Display In Atlanta
Steve McQueen’s 1957 Jaguar–a rare XK-SS roadster that the King of Cool affectionately dubbed “The Green Rat”–will go on display at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art as part of its upcoming The Allure of the Automobile show. Only 16 of the cars–a street version of the British marque’s legendary D-Type racer–were built between 1956-57. Examples can fetch upwards of $3 million at auction. McQueen paid a mere $5,000 for the Jag in the late ’50s and sold it in the ’60s, regretting it so much he later bought it back. An automotive work of art indeed.
