The genius of the ailing, great Dennis Hopper revealed in new art-and-photo tome.
Dennis Hopper’s seminal work as an actor and director is well known, but he’s also an accomplished painter, photographer, and art collector whose other talents inform his cinematic oeuvre. Dennis Hopper & the New Hollywood (Flammarion, $50), due out in April and born of an exhibition produced by the Cinémathique Francaise and the French Ministry of Culture, begins with Easy Rider and plots Hopper’s unconventional trajectory with a wealth of previously unpublished images. Along the way we get a glimpse of his own artwork alongside that of Hopper’s impressive collection, including pieces by Warhol, Ruscha, Lichtenstein and Basquiat. No wonder he only works when he wants to.
