New monograph features exclusive images of the design deity that is Los Angeles by the late-great architecture photographer Julius Shulman
Seven decades of love for L.A. is evident in “Julius Shulman Los Angeles: The Birth of a Modern Metropolis” by Sam Lubell and Douglas Woods. Rife with both his usual suspects-the midcentury modern masterpieces of Richard Neutra and Charles Eames-as well as iconic landmarks like Watts Tower and Grauman’s Chinese Theatre-the Rizzoli picture book in stores next week also acts as a guide through the growth of Los Angeles and its environs. Neighborhoods like Echo Park, side-towns like Century City and road-trip destinations such as Palm Springs also get visual shout-outs. It’s an architectural “Chinatown.” Those who hate L.A.-though they’ve never given it more than the superficial look and snub-may become converts after marveling at each edifice given its due within the 240 black-and-white and color pages. Shulman lived to be 98. We wish some of his architectural subjects had such stamina.
