Judy Linn captures Patti Smith in portraits of the artist as a young woman
Before Patti Smith really became a “rock star” – not that she ever followed the well-worn route of some contemporaries – she was a struggling poet, albeit obviously destined for greatness. In 1969 young photographer Judy Linn took her first portrait of the artist in what would grow to be a collaboration of several years’ standing. One hundred of Linn’s grainy, gritty, black and whites are featured in her new book “Patti Smith 1969 – 1976,” from Abrams. With appearances by Smith’s friends and lovers, including Robert Mapplethorpe and Sam Shepard, it’s a fitting tribute to a quirky icon and a vignette of a vanished, more visceral New York.
