Road-tripping the rounds of Maine’s coolest clam shacks
Hop in a convertible – anything from a 1950′s Austin-Healey to a new Porsche 911 will do, and hit the road for a tour of Maine’s classic clam shacks. The Clam Shack, Kennebunkport (pictured): One of the smallest shacks is also the best in the lobster roll biz, with homemade buns sealing the deal.
Nunan’s Lobster Hut, Kennebunkport: Rebecca Charles of Manhattan’s now-iconic Pearl Oyster Bar picks this as her favorite seafood shack in Maine. ‘Nuff said.
The Lobster Shack at Two Lights, Cape Elizabeth: On a rocky point across a cove from a couple of lighthouses, seaside dining doesn’t get any better.
Benny’s Famous Fried Clams, Portland: The city boasts many culinary delights but Benny’s ramshackle truck stop is the clam digger’s choice.
Waterman’s Beach Lobster, South Thomaston: When a shack comes with its own wharf and lobster boat, you know you’re in for super fresh.
Sprague’s Lobster, Wiscasset: An amazing view, fresh cut fries and half the wait time of the better-known Red’s across the street.
McLaughlin’s Lobster Shack, Lincolnville Beach: No frills lobster rolling right next to the Isleboro ferry with picturesque picnic tables on the water.
