National Portrait Gallery does the fatty-folds master-stroker right.
Running from February 9th through May 27th, “Lucian Freud: Portraits” awakens the genius of one of London’s and the world’s rawest painting greats. To us, he may be the last master (tell us who, if we’re wrong). The show, inside London’s National Portrait Gallery, both shocks and humanizes. Makes Damien Hirst seem like the weasel snake-oil salesman that he is (ka-zillionaire and all). A coffee table book of the exhibition, entitled “Lucian Freud: Painting People,” will also hit this month, featuring a terrific tribute to Freud, who died this past summer, by David Hockney.
Here’s where to see some of the goods. And get ready to cue up.
