The king of caught off-guard photography has a new show.
Here’s what Marvelli Gallery in Manhattan says about their upcoming retrospective, slated to be on exhibit later in 2012:
“This selection was drawn from several of Fink’s perennial series, sometimes spanning decades in the course of his 45 year career. Fink, for example, revisited rural Martin’s Creek, Pennsylvania and the wealthiest neighborhoods and suburbs in New York again and again throughout the 1970s and early ’80s to produce his seminal work Social Graces, which was exhibited at MoMA in 1979 and published by Aperture in the canonical book by the same title in 1984.
As you will see, Fink’s subjects are often caught mid-sentence, mid-expression, or absorbed entirely in pure emotion by the phantasmagorical light of his flash. The brutal honesty of these images have a leveling effect on humanity; regardless of social status, these characters share the same underlying sentiments, urges, and alliances.
These eight photographs, ranging in date from 1958 to 2000, illustrate both the depth of Fink’s commitment to and exploration of his subject matter and the development of his unique flash technique.”
