Trying to sum up and represent the whole of contemporary American art in one exhibition might seem impossible, but every two years the Whitney Museum gives it a whirl—and the results are rarely disappointing. Taking over a majority of the museum’s floor space and showcasing various art forms such as dance, film, music and performance, the 2012 edition includes such well-known figures as Werner Herzog, Vincent Gallo, Charles Atlas, K8 Hardy and the recently departed Mike Kelley.
