It’s been nearly six years since the music club Hilly Kristal founded in 1973 shuttered. But, thanks to a group of investors (some of which had direct ties to the venue), the name and nurturing spirit of Kristal’s palace is being kept alive with plans to open another club — and this incredibly ambitious four-day festival. Music is of course a huge element of this celebration, as more than 40 venues across the city play host to over 300 bands. Agnostic Front, Guided By Voices, Cloud Nothings, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Reggie Watts, Weekend, and the Baseball project are all scheduled to perform. Other components include screenings of rock-themed films, musically tinged comedy/improve shows, an industry-insider led conference keynoted by activist and former Nirvana bassist Kris Novoselic, and a closing-day distilled spirits fest. July 4th’s fireworks are going to be a hard act to follow, but this punk-fueled fête has an excellent party forefather.
