When creating his offbeat marionettes, local puppeteer Pablo Canousually begins by drawing on placemats (some of the coffee-stained doodles drawn while hanging out at his favorite Cuban café were once shown at a gallery in New York). But of course that’s just the beginning of an intricate process through which Cano breathes life into found objects, turning pots, pillows, even old auto parts, into charmingly composite puppets and sets. Don’t miss the revival of Cano’s The Toy Box, based on Claude Debussy’s ballet from 1913 and centered around a love triangle, reuniting him with choreographer Katherine Kramer and concert pianist Karen Schwartz (with music ranging from French folk to parodies of other composers).
