As an iconic figure in American counterculture and one of the founders of the American punk movement, Patti Smith remains well-deserving of her 2007 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Under the patronage of Robert Mapplethorpe, the New Jersey-bred Smith recorded her first single in 1974 (a cover of “Hey Joe,”) and has been making music ever since, working with everyone from Bruce Springsteen and R.E.M. to Allen Ginsberg and a smitten Lester Bangs.
